The longer they stayed at the lake, the more often Draco set out during the day. Not that it made a difference—he hardly slept these days anyway. His companion—his friend, Rosemary—was slowly getting better, but the dragon was still consumed by worry. He often lay awake while she slept, watching the rise and fall of her chest to reassure himself she was still breathing. But when he wasn’t worried about her health, he was worried about smothering her. So when she was settling for a nap, or wanting to stretch her legs, Draco would give her space and take himself for a walk—even if it was while the sun was still out. He never left without informing her that he was going for a walk—not after last time—and always promised her that he would be quick. Ne me manque pas trop, he always teased her before leaving, careful never to admit that he might miss her.
A dark cloud loomed over his head as he maneuvered along the northern shore, keeping to the shadows that the surrounding trees cast onto the sand. He hoped to collect some more sweet grass to bring back to Rosemary, as it seemed to be helping alleviate her symptoms. Draco knew his grandfather had spent much of his life near this lake—living in Driftwood and by a river deep in the northern woods—and couldn’t help but wonder how many times he’d walked this very path. To collect herbs. To teach his children—his father, his aunts and uncles—how to hunt and fish. To patrol. To clear his own thoughts.
The sound of moving water pulled the dragon from the depths of his thoughts. His pace quickened as he changed his course, abandoning the warm sand for the soft soil of the forest. It didn’t take him long to stumble upon the river, its clear waters carving a path through the forest before emptying into the lake. What he had not expected to see was an abundance of smooth bodies rolling through the water, bumping haphazardly into each other as they charged upstream. It looked like finding a meal (or two) for himself and Rosemary wasn’t going to be that hard after all.
