The sun was rising, always a bittersweet time as it meant he would soon be ushered back into the den for the dreaded sleep. Yet dawn was also the most interesting hour in the Backwater, many of the adults were just returning from a night spent outside the territory, bringing stories of their adventures. Axil wanted to stay up all day and listen to their stories, to live vicariously through them while he waited, not so patiently, for a time when he would be allowed to go out with them.
The boy paced anxiously in front of the den, casting frequent glances behind him, expecting his parents to appear at any moment; Just a little longer…! He swore he could smell someone coming; Come on, come on! A bundle of uncontrollable energy, Axil was almost spinning in place, taking a single step in one direction before switching back, his skinny tail flailing wildly in his excitement.
Finally, he couldn’t stand it anymore, rushing into the trees, just as a pale figure appeared. The boy barked loudly in his enthusiasm, reaching up to lick the adult’s chin before he even realized who it was, and by then it was too late. “Dad?” he blurted, momentarily bewildered by being faced with his hope and fear all in one. But he very quickly recovered, tail resuming its manic wag as he hoped up to brace his paws against Oleander’s shoulder, whining excitedly: “What’id you do today? Somethin’ fun? Will you tell me ‘bout it? Just a little bit? Please?” He’d keep begging all morning if he had to, only agreeing to go to sleep once his father told him everything about his day, the sound of his voice the only thing that might lull the pup to sleep.
