It was such a small world. First dark, and then dim, with soft, black shadows that smelled like home and loved them. Yes, it was a small world and it was about to get bigger. Jessamy and Sari had been growing and their world tightened around them, and the pair wanted to know what was in the light that kept swallowing the shadows that were their parents.
They spent most of the morning jostling each other, poking toward the light and willing the other to go first. Finally Sari was the one to be brave and begin the crawl toward the light, but Jessamy was hot on her heels. She was just as curious, just as thirsty for new experience as her twin.
The girls emerged together, Jessamy wiggling up to swish beside Sari at the last moment. Matching gazes surveyed the world around them, wide with wonder.
It hadn't been a small world, it had been tiny. The pups could not speak but when they looked at each other it was clear they were in agreement - neither would be content in the den ever again.
Jessamy celebrated this revelation by suddenly pouncing on her sister with a sharp yap.
